Where did the name come from?

My interpretation of a picture of caveman art that I saw when I was young.

How did your style develop into what it is today?

I guess it was a natural evolution. I’ve been into a lot of edgy left field electronic music movements for years as well as being heavy into rap and other urban musics. For as long as I remember I was trying to champion the merger of the two, way before it was the popular trend that it is now. When grime came along in the UK that really made things click for me in a certain way, as far as bridging urban and electronic vibes. Soon after that the throw everything in a blender ‘Street Bass’ ethic was born. And I’ve been happing rocking with these styles ever since, yet always striving for fresh approaches and evolutions in the tracks I make (as well as the ones we sign to the labels).

What is your DAW of choice?

Ableton Live! Plus a plethora of plug ins (I know you like that alliteration) and a bunch of hardware pieces I’ve collected over the years like the Red Sound Darkstar synth, Yamaha A3000 sampler, etc.

What drove you to start and work on so many record labels?

It just sort of developed into us running two labels. We didn’t necessarily plan for it to be that way. Slit Jockey Records is a bit more narrowed in on grime and UKG influenced bass music, whereas Seclusiasis is a bit more open ended with its reach into various styles of electronic and rap music, but with somewhat of a focus on the crossover street bass sound. I have to admit that sometimes its frustrating having 2 imprints, ha. Its double the branding, promo, outlooks, etc. But having the different focuses and niches has proved beneficial and fun plus its all we know at this point icon wink *MYN Exclusive Mix/Artist Interview* Dev79

What’s the music scene in Philadelphia like?

Its bubbling here right now. I’ve sensed an energy brewing the last couple years that I don’t remember being here for a long time. Its exciting to see a new generation of creative talent coming into its own. The talent pool here is sick, watch out world!

Who is your artist to watch right now?

Probably G Jones. He’s been fucking shit up left and right.

What is one thing people should know about you?

Raw Passion.

What’s up next for Dev79?

In July Seclusiasis will be dropping “Starkey & Dev79 present Street Bass Anthems Vol 7” which is a sick 16 track compilation that we’re proud to add to the street bass legacy! It’ll have 3 new songs from me, including my collabs with Starkey and Che Grand. I previewed a number of the tracks from the comp in my MusicYouNeed mix.

Besides that I have a few remixes dropping this summer for Aquadrop, Alexander Supertrill, Pushy! and some others, plus a couple other compilations appearances coming soon too.

Anything else you’d like to mention?

My “Boom Boom Down” EP dropped last month on Cobra Krames’ Gold Whistle label and if you didn’t already cop it, what the fuck are you waiting for?? Featuring dope remixes by Dave Luxe, Tanner Caldwell and Max Klaw. iTunes, Juno, Beatport, Amazon, etc – ya’ll know the score, show me some love!

Plus I’m looking to get out and DJ as much as possible, spreading the street bass and grime vibes to any and all gritty places that’ll have me!
